Something in the wind
The term “something in the wind” is a phrase I use often. Sometimes we can feel things in the wind. Sometimes when we hear the wind’s melodic and lovely chimes, we feel a sense of buoyancy and sweet freedom.
The wind can take us back in time too. We may remember the smell of freshly cut grass or the trills of merry laughter. There is something magical about the wind. But it can go the other way too. In the days of trump, I often felt something dark in the wind’s whistling.
And even now, sometimes when I see automobiles driving just a bit more furiously than years before or see too many scowls that linger, I wonder about the feeling of anger that seems to hang overhead, perhaps a reminder of trump and Covid and of sad times gone by.
Anger has been around forever, but we are seeing a lot of it lately. And as I write these words, two very angry videos are being discussed all over the news. One of the videos of the Paul Pelosi attack. That should put to bed any conspiracies. Yet these conspiracy theorists should be ashamed as they are part of the problem.
They refuse to see reality and to let go of the crazy theories that contribute to the angry whistles the wind occasionally makes And then there is the video of the five evil police officers who brutalized Tyre Nichols. That video is set for release tonight. By the time you read these words, it might already be released.
It makes me sick. I tremble to think of the anger of maniacs. There has been too much hurt, too much rage, and so much pain. I know we cannot save everybody. I wish we could. I do wish we DID have a magic wand and could ensure the angry whistling leaves everybody permanently.
But that isn’t the way things work. What we can do is take note. We can all be a little bit kinder, a little bit more sensitive, and a little bit gentler, myself included.
So please remember that the next time the anger comes whistling. Remember, too, the good and the beauty in politics and in this world, as there is much. We see it in the faces of activists, of democrats, and in the quick work of law enforcement who arrested the people alleged to have done this horrific thing in Memphis. We need to remember the good and that will allow us to fight the bad.
