Over the past week we’ve seen a number of Bernie Sanders expressing frustration at Elizabeth Warren’s unwillingness to endorse him when she dropped out of the race. At the time Warren dropped out, Palmer Report pointed out that Warren’s fans were likely to split themselves between Biden and Sanders in some kind of roughly equal fashion, no matter what Warren said or didn’t say.

This brings us to Tuesday’s Michigan primary contest. Joe Biden ended up winning by eighteen points. Here’s the thing. We went back through the polling archives for February and March, and we couldn’t find a single Michigan poll that had Elizabeth Warren doing any better than 13% in the state.

This makes mathematically clear that even if Elizabeth Warren had endorsed Bernie Sanders ahead of the Michigan primary, she could not possibly have swung the state in Sanders’ favor – even if every last one of her supporters had switched over to Sanders. We can talk about why Sanders has done so much more poorly in 2020 than he did in 2016, but Warren’s refusal to endorse him had nothing to do with it.
