So much for that whole “Biden impeachment” thing

For months, House Republicans have been publicly threatening to impeach President Joe Biden. Accordingly we’ve had to hear near-constant media hype about the topic. It’s been a daily chyron on the likes of MSNBC and CNN. You haven’t been able to get away from the topic.

Of course the entire reason House Republicans have been publicly threatening a Biden impeachment has been so that the entire media (on both sides) would spend every day hyping the notion. This has allowed House Republicans to use the supposed Biden impeachment as a fundraising tool. But now that it’s getting closer to put up or shut up time, even the most rabid House Republicans are now walking back their impeachment talk. For instance, Marjorie Taylor Greene has gone from calling for impeachment, to now calling for a mere impeachment inquiry, which isn’t anything.

This is no big surprise. House Republicans know that impeaching Biden would only help his 2024 prospects, and hurt their own. Their plan all along has been to keep threatening to impeach Biden, so that the entire media (on both sides) would act as the Republicans’ publicist by hyping impeachment like it was actually going to happen. Now that the Republicans appear to have finally milked the impeachment threat dry in terms of making money off it, they’re pulling back on it.

The odds of Biden impeachment are still greater than zero, because these House Republicans are rudderless idiots and could end up making some really stupid decisions as we get closer to Donald Trump’s criminal trials and imprisonment. But it’s now obvious that impeachment isn’t happening at this time, and that in fact it was never really on the table. As usual, the Republicans counted on the entire media (on both sides) to act as their publicist, by hyping an empty threat as if it were real.

We can’t force the Republicans to start behaving decently, but we can pressure the media into no longer playing publicist for the Republicans. Every time MSNBC and CNN put the words “Biden” and “impeachment” in a chyron, they knew darn well that it was highly unlikely to end up happening. We can force the major media outlets to start behaving more honestly, by threatening to cut into their ratings until they come around.
