Yesterday Donald Trump officially returned to Twitter, after an absence so long that the platform now has a new name. He (or his handlers) posted a flurry of campaign related tweets, and gave the appearance that he really was back to tweeting regularly. Of course this was all a prelude to Trump’s much hyped live interview with Twitter’s owner – which by any measure was a disaster.

Now that Trump’s big return to Twitter has bombed, he’s stopped tweeting entirely. It’s been seventeen hours since his last tweet. Over on his own platform, Truth Social, he’s still ranting away at a rate of more than one post per hour, as usual. But the Twitter experiment may be over already.

Of course this isn’t the first time Trump has “returned” to Twitter only to bail. When he was first arrested, he returned to Twitter to post his mugshot, but then disappeared from the platform after just the one tweet. Now it’s possible that his latest “return” is also over already. Perhaps this is due to the nosedive that Truth Social’s stock price took when Trump began tweeting, or maybe it’s something else. Either way, it’s eye opening.

For all its mounting problems, Twitter is still the political platform. Donald Trump’s ongoing refusal to regularly use Twitter is nothing short of candidate malpractice, and suggests that he’s not serious about winning at all.
