So much for impeachment helping Donald Trump
If Nancy Pelosi had initiated impeachment against Donald Trump before she had her hands on enough evidence to do real damage to him, it would have backfired and emboldened him. But this whistleblower scandal is tailor made for impeachment – and two weeks into it – we’re seeing hard evidence that impeachment is in fact hurting, and not helping, Trump’s cause.
It’s not just that pro-impeachment polls have begun climbing by a significant margin. It’s that Donald Trump’s approval rating has dropped a few points since impeachment began, which (thus far at least) completely wipes out the notion that impeachment would somehow cause anyone among the public to suddenly start supporting him.
Based on his words behind closed doors, Donald Trump doesn’t seem to think that this is going well for him. Trump is lamenting privately to House Republicans that impeachment is a bad thing to have on his resume, according to Axios. That’s a rare note of lucidity from a guy who seems to spend most of his time trying to convince himself that fake polls from Breitbart and Rasmussen are somehow indicative that he’s widely beloved.
Donald Trump is trying to convince House Republicans to stick with him by promising them that his impeachment will somehow magically result in not only his reelection, but in the Republicans winning the House majority, per that same Axios report. This is almost hilariously delusional, and while there are some real dimwits in the GOP House, you have to figure that even some of them know how to read poll numbers. So much for impeachment helping Donald Trump. So far at least, it’s costing him everything.
