So much for Donald Trump’s magic “delay” wand
Ever since Donald Trump first got criminally indicted, we’ve been hearing over and over again about how he was going to “delay, delay, delay” and “run out the clock.” It’s been painted as almost a given that his criminal trials would all somehow be pushed past the 2024 election. But here’s the thing: it doesn’t work that way.
We were reminded of this on Wednesday when the U.S. Court of Appeals laughed off Trump’s last ditch attempt at getting out of his second E. Jean Carroll civil trial. Now it’s set to start on time. This comes after Trump’s last ditch filings failed to delay his first E. Jean Carroll trial. It also comes after Trump’s filings failed to delay his New York civil fraud trial.
So even as we get closer to Donald Trump’s criminal trials, and we keep hearing even more chatter about how he’s going to “delay, delay, delay” and “run out the clock,” let’s keep in mind that this isn’t really how it works. If Trump had those kinds of powers, his civil trials never would have gotten underway. He simply doesn’t have a magic wand.
