So it’s not Mark Meadows
When the January 6th Committee announced that Donald Trump very recently tried to tamper with an unnamed witness who hasn’t yet appeared in any public hearings, it set off a flurry of speculation about the person’s identity. When Trump’s people then tried to publicly scapegoat Mark Meadows in rather vicious fashion, it led a number of people to wonder if Meadows is the witness in question.
We pointed out that while it could be Meadows, it could just as easily be someone who –like Cassidy Hutchinson – isn’t coming into this as a household name. Sure enough, CNN is now reporting that the witness is a former Trump White House “support staffer” whose direct communication with Donald Trump did not take place on a routine basis. This certainly rules out Meadows.
But it also means that whoever this witness is, Trump is clearly freaked out by what this person knows, and what this person knows about Trump’s crime spree. It’s worth keeping in mind that Trump’s attempt at witness tampering did not work, and that this witness instead reported Trump’s tampering and is working with the committee. Meanwhile, the question of why Trump’s people are suddenly trying to scapegoat Mark Meadows is still an open one.
