Sounds like Senate Democrats already have Robert Mueller’s smoking gun
Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s letter to Attorney General William Barr, in which Mueller states that Barr grossly mischaracterized the contents of the Mueller report, is a smoking gun for essentially taking Barr off the table. The question is who has the letter right now, who’s about to have the letter, and when they’re about to have it. We just got a big hint that Senate Democrats already have it.
Washington Post writer Devlin Barrett, who helped break the story, appeared on the Rachel Maddow show on Tuesday night. He revealed that while he’s seen and read Mueller’s letter, he doesn’t have his own copy of it “yet,” and that he’ll publish it as soon as he does. He also stated his expectation that the letter will surface during Barr’s testimony tomorrow before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
It’s not difficult to parse what he’s saying: he thinks someone on the Senate Judiciary Committee has a copy of it, and is going to bust it out during tomorrow’s hearings. The only people on the committee who would voluntarily produce it tomorrow would be the Democrats on the committee. For reference, that list includes heavy hitters like Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, Amy Klobuchar, Richard Blumenthal, and ranking member Dianne Feinstein.
Stay tuned. Tomorrow’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing is set to begin at 10am eastern time, likely airing on every cable news network plus C-SPAN. It’ll begin with extended statements from Chairman Lindsey Graham and then Dianne Feinstein. After that, assuming Barr even shows up at this point, each Senator on the committee will get five minutes to question him.
