Canadian singer Shania Twain suddenly found herself at the center of controversy on Sunday after The Guardian quoted her as saying she would have voted for Donald Trump in the 2016 election. That catapulted her name to the very top of Twitter’s trending topics list, with most of the sentiment toward her being negative. Now she’s apologizing and trying to provide context for her controversial Trump quote.

Here’s what The Guardian quoted Shania Twain as saying in an interview: “I would have voted for him because, even though he was offensive, he seemed honest. Do you want straight or polite? Not that you shouldn’t be able to have both. If I were voting, I just don’t want bullshit. I would have voted for a feeling that it was transparent. And politics has a reputation of not being that, right?”

Shortly after the controversy erupted and people were talking about boycotting her music, Twain posted this lengthy explanation on Twitter: “I would like to apologise to anybody I have offended in a recent interview with the Guardian relating to the American President. The question caught me off guard. As a Canadian, I regret answering this unexpected question without giving my response more context I am passionately against discrimination of any kind and hope it’s clear from the choices I have made, and the people I stand with, that I do not hold any common moral beliefs with the current President.”

Shania Twain went on to talk about her “limited understanding” of what actually went on in the U.S. election. So do you believe that she didn’t really mean what she appeared to have said in the newspaper interview? Is she only apologizing because she realizes she had it wrong, or because she’s in trouble over it? In any case, it’s a reminder that Donald Trump is radioactive.
