Senile Donald Trump just stepped in it
Ever since the judge first brought up the prospect of jail time two weeks ago, Donald Trump has been sheepishly abiding by his gag order. He’s clearly afraid of being locked up. But now there’s a new scheme in which his surrogates, ranging from family members to congress members, show up to the trial and violate the gag order on his behalf.
As I pointed out earlier in the week, there’s no easy way for the judge or prosecutors to bust up this racket, because doing so would require evidence that Trump is coordinating with his surrogates on this messaging – and no such evidence exists.
But when Trump was asked about his surrogates by the media today, he stepped in it in the most senile way possible. He was supposed to say that he has no knowledge of what his associates are saying about the trial witnesses, so as to insulate himself from the whole thing. Instead Trump praised his surrogates for the beautiful words they’ve been speaking.
This likely still isn’t enough to nail Trump for sending surrogates out to the courthouse media to violate the gag order for him. But it sure does march Trump closer to getting himself nailed for it. The problem for Trump is that he can’t even seem to remember what his people are telling him to say in response to any given question. There really is nothing left of him.
