Senate Republicans really screwed themselves on this one

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

Back when most of the Republican Senate voted against what would have been a bipartisan commission to investigate the January 6th Capitol attack, Palmer Report pointed out that they’d made a mistake. Speaker Nancy Pelosi had already publicly hinted that if the vote failed, she would appoint a select committee to investigate the attack instead – and this kind of investigation would give the Republicans less control over the probe.

Now it turns out Senate Republicans screwed themselves even worse than we thought. Pelosi has announced that the select committee will be allowed to carry out its investigation for as long as it likes. This means that if and when the initial hearings lead to additional evidence and witnesses, the hearings can just keep going and going.

Joy Reid pointed out that whereas the bipartisan commission would have only lasted through the end of 2021, this Democratic Party-controlled select committee will able to still have the Capitol attack investigation and hearings going on during the 2022 election cycle. In other words, this really is going to come back to bite the Republicans for their refusal to allow a bipartisan commission to exist.
