Senate Democrats now say they think there’s a good chance the DOJ will prosecute Donald Trump. There’s a good chance they’re right. The breadcrumbs have been emerging for the past week:

– The DOJ has reportedly begun having Capitol invaders formally attest, as part of their guilty pleas, that they believed Trump wanted them to do it. The most obvious reason to do this is to use it as evidence in a criminal case against Trump.

– The DOJ’s decision to wait and take down the entire Oath Keepers leadership at once seems aimed at getting them to compete with each other for a plea deal. The most likely targets of such a deal would be Roger Stone or Alex Jones, who could then be flipped against Trump. Jones’ bizarre (even for him) freak out in reaction to the arrests suggests that he sees it this way as well.

– This weekend an Oath Keepers attorney confirmed to the Washington Post that the DOJ has been seeking evidence against Roger Stone and Rudy Giuliani from his clients. Again, key Trump insiders who could be flipped against Trump.

– Mike Lindell now says his bank is closing him out due to the threat of a federal subpoena. This, combined with earlier reporting that the DOJ is probing Sidney Powell’s finances, points to the DOJ following the 1/6 money trail deep into Trump world.

None of this guarantees that the DOJ will prosecute Trump. It’s still only reasonable to expect it’ll happen if one or more close Trump allies flips on him. But all these breadcrumbs, taken together, strongly point to the DOJ intending to bring a case against Trump if it thinks it can win at trial. Further, the sudden surfacing of all these breadcrumbs suggests that the DOJ’s effort against Trump may have reached a stage where it can no longer be kept fully secret.

This is all in addition to the now extremely likely criminal charges against Trump in Georgia, and the seemingly inevitable criminal charges in New York. DOJ prosecution against Trump, if it happens, will just be icing on the cake.
