When Jack Smith criminally indicted Donald Trump for January 6th last week and listed six co-conspirators who are also presumably on track for indictment, some of them were obvious. Rudy Giuliani. Sidney Powell. John Eastman. But when various news outlets pieced together that “Co-Conspirator 5” in the indictment was Kenneth Chesebro, the most common response was, who?

Now we’re getting some background on why Chesebro, in spite of being a lower profile name than the other alleged co-conspirators, managed to make the list of six. It turns out Chesebro authored a secret memo spelling out a plan to push Mike Pence into falsely naming Trump the winner of the 2020 election based on the fake electors, according to a New York Times expose this evening.

So why does this matter? The more thoroughly Jack Smith has the six co-conspirators nailed, the better odds he has of flipping some or all of them against Trump. Chesebro, being the lowest profile of the gang of six, could potentially be seen as the “weak link” in terms of getting someone to flip. So it matters greatly that Jack Smith appears to have Chesebro rather thoroughly nailed.
