Donald Trump screams for help into the abyss, and no one answers
Nine months ago, when Donald Trump first started to realize that the Trump-Russia investigation wasn’t going to end well for him, he famously begged the Republicans in Congress to “DO SOMETHING!” A few of them obliged by misusing their positions to try to run interference for him, but none of that ended up derailing the investigation. Today, Trump received the news that he’s been fearing all along. Now he’s even more frantically begging for help, and no one seems interested in answering.
This morning Donald Trump tweeted this about Robert Mueller’s investigation: “This is a terrible situation and Attorney General Jeff Sessions should stop this Rigged Witch Hunt right now.” We’ve since learned that Trump posted this shortly after he learned that Mueller is now offering to limit the questions asked during a potential interview with Trump. This means that A) Mueller has called his bluff, B) Trump now has to immediately decide whether to do the interview or risk getting subpoenaed, and C) Mueller has built his criminal case against Trump, as the interview was only ever going to take place at the end of it.
The trouble for Donald Trump is that Jeff Sessions has no intention of helping him on this. We saw that a year and a half ago, when Sessions immediately recused himself from the investigation after getting caught having lied to Congress about it. Sessions isn’t going to suddenly stick his neck out for Trump now by un-recusing himself and trying to illegally end the investigation. We’ve already seen that no one else is willing to save him.
Last week, Trump’s few true GOP allies in the House tried to start the impeachment process against Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, in the hope of removing him and thus shutting down the Trump-Russia investigation. But the likes of Paul Ryan and Trey Gowdy quickly shut that down because, whatever you think of them, they’re not willing to risk getting criminally charged with obstruction of justice.
Donald Trump is screaming for help into the abyss, and there’s no one there who’s willing to oblige. Trump knows that the end is near, and that he and everyone in his orbit are going down. The problem he now faces is that everyone else knows it too, and thus no one who’s in a position to help him wants to be in his orbit.
