In the days since Rudy Giuliani’s Ukraine scandal henchmen were arrested on federal criminal charges, he still hasn’t bothered to reference them. In the day since it was reported that Giuliani himself is the current target of the criminal investigation, he’s merely told the media that it can’t possibly be true. Now, however, things seem to be sinking in for Rudy that he’s near the end.

Rudy suddenly no longer seems all that interested in defending himself, and he’s instead begun engaging in what we can best describe as lament. He’s tweeting about the days when he was known as a “crime buster.” He’s thanking a stray follower who asserted that he’s still “America’s Mayor.” He’s sad that his baseball team appears unlikely to survive in this year’s playoffs.

You could make the argument that we’re reading too much into these tweets. But over these past few days we’ve seen a wholesale change in the nature of Rudy Giuliani’s tone and focus. He’s now reduced to lamenting about his past glory days, and trying to get lost in baseball. In fact we’ve seen this before. After it became apparent that Rudy’s associate Paul Manafort would soon be indicted and arrested, Manafort popped up at a baseball game, as if it were a last hurrah.

If Rudy Giuliani’s arrest does arrive in the coming days, it’ll serve as a sad – but necessary – end to a guy who went from demonstrating American leadership and fighting crime, to now sabotaging American leadership and committing crimes. Rudy is having a sad day. Considering that one of his associates just agreed to sell him out to the House impeachment inquiry, Rudy has good reason to be sad. He’s toast.
