Donald Trump runs and hides after Rudy Giuliani makes things even worse for him
After the week he had, was it possible for Rudy Giuliani to find a way to screw things up even worse for Donald Trump? Today we learned that the answer was a definitive “yes.” Rudy said something so stupid and damaging this morning on the Sunday talk show circuit, any rational client would have stormed onto the set and fired him on the spot. Instead, Trump has gone into some sort of weird hiding.
During the course of this week Rudy has admitted that Donald Trump was involved in the Michael Cohen payoff to Stormy Daniels, and that Trump fired FBI Director James Comey to sabotage the Russia investigation, which amounted to a confession to multiple felonies. Rudy also implied that Jared Kushner was expendable, while giving away that Trump’s greatest fear is that Ivanka will be criminally charged. Then he dragged Melania into the mess. Then he seemed to admit that he expects Trump to be criminally indicted in the Southern District of New York. But it turns out all of that was a mere warm up act for this morning.
Rudy Giuliani just announced on live national television that Donald Trump might invoke the Fifth Amendment in order to avoid being interviewed by Special Counsel Robert Mueller. While the law does not see pleading the Fifth as an admission of guilt, the court of public opinion largely does. It would be a uniquely crippling blow from which he wouldn’t recover politically. Trump himself once famously said that people only plead the Fifth if they’re guilty.
Yet now Donald Trump isn’t saying anything at all. With the single exception of a promotional tweet which was clearly posted by his staff, Trump hasn’t tweeted anything at all since Friday. Trump has become scared to death, even as Rudy Giuliani continues to help ensure the death of Trump’s presidency.
