RIP to George H.W. Bush. On his worst day, he was a better president and a better human than Donald Trump. I bring up President Bush here because Trump, whose seemingly ever-worsening criminal scandals have finally hit critical mass, is now using Bush’s passing as a cheap excuse for cowardice – and while I’m not sure how many news outlets are going to call him out for it, it needs to be highlighted.

Here’s what the Associated Press passed along this morning: “Trump cancels summit news conference `out of respect for the Bush Family’ after death of former president.” Under different circumstances, coming from a different person, we could buy that. But we’ve all seen that, despite whatever kind statements his staff may release, Trump’s own words and tweets have made clear that he doesn’t have any respect for the passing of American political figures. Or have we forgotten how he behaved after John McCain died?

Further, we all know what’s going on with Donald Trump right now. His former attorney just exposed him as having criminally conspired with Vladimir Putin during the election. His favorite money laundering bank and his former tax attorney just saw their offices raided. His kids are in danger of being imminently indicted. His puppet master Vladimir Putin is writing him off as a lost cause.

Donald Trump can’t face reporters right now; it would go horribly for him. Yet instead of simply blowing off the press conference and blaming his travel schedule or some other mundane reason that would have been glossed over amid the current political chaos, Trump is using the death of President George H.W. Bush as a cheap excuse to run and hide. That’s so typical of Trump, we’ve come to expect it. But he still needs to be called out for it.
