Rudy Giuliani reaches his breaking point
Now that Rudy Giuliani has practically admitted that Donald Trump’s campaign conspired with Russia to steal the 2016 presidential election, Trump might want to rethink sending his lawyer to appear on any more cable news shows. During an interview on CNN’s “Cuomo Prime Time,” Giuliani made the outrageous claim that, despite Giuliani and Trump screaming NO COLLUSION for the past two years, “I never said there was no collusion between the campaign, or people in the campaign.”
Giuliani’s claim was seen by many as the inadvertent admission of guilt by a desperate man suffering from dementia, while a few made the claim that he’s actually an evil genius. While I think it is certainly more of the former, this is not the first time Giuliani has publicly confirmed wrongdoing by Trump or his campaign just prior to evidence confirming such claims being made public. Sure enough, a day after Rudy’s appearance, we learned that Robert Mueller has Trump nailed for instructing Michael Cohen to lie to Congress about Trump Tower Moscow.
Joyce Alene, a law professor and former US attorney, was appearing on MSNBC’s “Hardball” when she claimed, “We’ve seen him do this before. Every time there’s a new big shoe about to drop, Giuliani shows up on a television show someplace and fronts up the news.” While this could very well be the strategy Trump’s lawyers have decided to try, simply admitting their crimes before Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report is made public is not going to save them. Another possibility is that Giuliani is just trying to get the investigation over with as soon as possible.
According to Gabriel Sherman’s new article in Vanity Fair, “Rudy hates the job,” and is sick of working for Trump. A prominent Republican close to the White House told Sherman that things are growing more hectic and Trump has no actual plan to end the shutdown. “People are looking around asking, ‘What’s the play call?’” the Republican said. “He’s calling plays from the line of scrimmage … This was not played well. He’s in a pickle now, and I don’t see a way out.” Perhaps this is the same way Giuliani feels about defending Trump, and these public admissions are his way of getting out as fast as possible.
