Ron DeSantis of all people just made Kevin McCarthy’s life even harder

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

Just when you thought that Kevin McCarthy’s impeachment standoff couldn’t get any dumber, Ron DeSantis decided it would be a good opportunity to throw himself into the mess. Kevin McCarthy is likely to be House Speaker for a much shorter timeframe than he ever aspired to be House Speaker, as he has both the Republicans in moderate districts that went to President Biden in 2020 by double digits and the MAGA Republicans that he has to appease, a goal that’s largely impossible given how demented the modern GOP is nowadays.

DeSantis, whose campaign is all but dead because he’s outed himself as a whiny weirdo that no one likes, got on the phone with far-right congressional reps Chip Roy and Bob Good, urging them to have McCarthy embrace a government shutdown. It’s not quite clear what this will do for DeSantis – apart from definitely not restarting his presidential bid – something that’s already seen a reset without any real improvements.

DeSantis has no charisma, no personality, and not really any political instincts to speak of – as he’s only giving his political opponents ammo to hit him with on both sides as well as someone to blame if a shutdown happens, rather than giving them the trap door to blame it on President Biden’s policies. The media might like portraying these people as evil geniuses – and while they are evil, they’re also the furthest thing from responsible adults, who shouldn’t be trusted with power. That’s why we need to vote them out at all levels in 2023 and 2024.
