Ron DeSantis just got some terrible news

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is facing endless scandals, and he’s keeps demonstrating that he lacks the savvy or cunning to figure out how to get past them. All signs are that he’s in over his head, as he faces reelection next year. Now he just got hit with some particularly bad news.

New polling from St. Pete Polls has Ron DeSantis tied in a hypothetical 2022 matchup against Democratic politician Nikki Fried. We’re always a bit hesitant when it’s just one poll, as polling averages prove to be more reliable. But if this one poll is even close to accurate, then DeSantis has a real problem.

At this point in the race, Ron DeSantis should be well ahead in the polling, due to his incumbency and name recognition advantage. Voters already know who he is, and they know he’s going to be the Republican nominee, so he’s at his ceiling. Contrast that to the Democratic side, where no one even knows who the candidates are yet, and Democratic-leaning voters still have various preferences about who their nominee should be.

Whoever the Democratic nominee ends up being, Democratic-leaning voters will coalesce behind that candidate, boosting that candidate’s numbers. DeSantis would need to currently be well ahead in the polls in order to be considered viable. The fact that he’s tied, in a hypothetical matchup at a time when the Democrats don’t even have a candidate slate yet, means he’s effectively behind in his race for reelection. In other words, he’s so uniquely unpopular, he’s beatable – even in a wacky state like Florida.
