Ron DeSantis is falling to pieces as Florida circles the drain
Ron DeSantis is inevitable, pundits on both sides tell us, because, well, he just is. The pundit class is so eager to coronate DeSantis as the 2024 frontrunner for President, because an inept and loud idiot like him would be great for ratings, it’s written off entirely any possibility that DeSantis might be in trouble in his 2022 reelection effort for Governor of Florida.
But facts have a funny way of ending up mattering, even when they’re not ratings-friendly. Sure enough, just as Palmer Report predicted months ago, DeSantis is now polling behind one of his 2022 Democratic opponents for Governor. This isn’t the least bit surprising; DeSantis has always been a wannabe Trump clone who lacks even the one dimensional savvy that allowed Trump to get as far as he did in politics before failing miserably.
Today we saw Ron DeSantis angrily lashing out at President Biden during a press conference, even as Florida’s COVID situation becomes utterly nightmarish. Polls show that most Floridians now agree with enacting mask mandates in the state, yet DeSantis is as against it as ever, because he still doesn’t understand that getting reelected requires broad support and not just base support – in the same way that Trump never understood as much.
It’s fitting that DeSantis is following the Trump model of getting into office on a fluke, fumbling everything, acting like an arrogant prick, pandering to a too-small base, wondering why his approval rating is dropping, and whining like a baby as he realizes he may lose reelection. The big difference is that DeSantis can only try to abuse the power of the governorship to try to manufacture his reelection, whereas Trump had the far broader power of the presidency to try to do the same – and even Trump couldn’t pull it off.
