Roger Stone seemingly hints that he wants a plea deal
Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: Roger Stone has posted something provocative on Instagram, in the hope of garnering attention. The closer Robert Mueller has come to nailing Stone, the more outrageous Stone’s posts have become. But last night at around three in the morning, Stone made a different kind of post, which – depending on how one interprets it – could be a hint that he wants a plea deal.
Here’s what Roger Stone posted in the middle of the night last night: “Robert Mueller knows if he wants to remove Donald Trump he’ll have to come thru me.” On first read, it sounds like Stone is telling Mueller that he’ll stand in the way of any attempt at getting to Trump. But parse it more carefully, and you realize that Stone is flat out telling Mueller that he can indeed get to Trump by going through Stone.
Take this for whatever you want. But in our view, it’s rather oddly specific. Interestingly, Roger Stone made this post just hours before his longtime associate Jerome Corsi announced that he’s backing out of his own plea deal negotiations. Is Stone now signaling to Mueller that he wants to be brought in to cut a deal?
We’re sure Stone will dispute any such interpretation of his words, because his official position is still that he won’t sell out Donald Trump no matter what. But his wording and timing here is, shall we say, interesting. To date, Robert Mueller is not known to have made any attempt at negotiating or communication with Stone, even as Mueller has hauled countless Stone associates in front a grand jury.
