Roger Stone’s last ditch effort to save himself could screw a bunch of Donald Trump’s people
Although Robert Mueller’s report says that he’s spun off fourteen ongoing federal criminal cases, which could result in any number of additional indictments in Trump land, Mueller is done indicting people directly. That means Roger Stone is the only person Mueller indicted for lying to Congress. If that seems odd to you, you’re not alone; Stone is demanding answers as well.
As part of his legal defense strategy heading into trial, Roger Stone is now formally seeking information on whether Robert Mueller investigated anyone else in Trump land for lying to Congress. Why? If Mueller did find evidence that others lied to Congress, but only indicted Stone for it, Stone can argue that he was targeted for selective prosecution. This is a last ditch effort, but what happens if Stone succeeds?
There is plenty of circumstantial evidence that various Trump-related people did lie to Congress. For instance, various House Democrats have asserted that Donald Trump Jr lied to them while under oath. Erik Prince gave an interview last month and appeared to directly confess to having lied to Congress under oath. Jerome Corsi claims that Mueller threatened to indict him for lying to Congress under oath. Yet none of these people were indicted for perjury, and we don’t know why.
Let’s say that Roger Stone’s lawyers manage to expose that Robert Mueller strategically took a pass on indicting a bunch of other Trump-related people for perjury, and only indicted Stone for it. We don’t know what effect it would have on his case. But it would certainly cause problems for any names that get unearthed. It would put enormous pressure on the DOJ to go back and indict those people for perjury after all. So this is worth watching.
