House Republicans tip off that they’re scared to death of what Robert Mueller is about to do to Donald Trump
Special Counsel Robert Mueller swung and missed when it came to prosecutorially taking down Donald Trump – or perhaps failed to swing – but he still has one thing left to do. Mueller has been subpoenaed by House Democrats to publicly testify this month about Trump’s crimes and scandals. House Republicans are naturally unhappy about this, but today they revealed just how scared they are of how it’s going to play out.
Louie Gohmert, one of the less stable and more hyperbolic of the far-right House Republicans, went nuclear on Robert Mueller today. Gohmert insisted that Mueller has done “irreparable damage” – though he couldn’t seem to specify any such supposed damage – and he also called Mueller an “anal opening.” We assume that’s Gohmert’s way of calling him an “asshole.”
Why does this matter? After all, Louie Gohmert has been firmly off his rocker since long before Robert Mueller’s investigation came along. The thing is, Gohmert – the demonically possessed spirit animal for the House GOP – just gave away what his fellow House Republicans are afraid of.
The only card House Republicans have to play during Robert Mueller’s testimony is to try to hit him with Donald Trump’s deranged conspiracy theories about Peter Strzok and Lisa Page, and they know that nonsense won’t go anywhere outside of Trump’s own base. The Republicans are going to look bad – very bad – during this hearing. Their pal Trump is going to look even worse. Real damage will be done to Trump and his faction of the GOP. Gohmert just gave away that they know it already.
