Robert Mueller drops Trump-Russia bombshell
Earlier today Donald Trump tried to take the focus off his increasingly scandalous Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, while also sabotaging his nemesis Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, by feeding the New York Times a wildly misleading story about Rosenstein having tried to invoke the 25th Amendment against him. But, as we’ve seen happen in these situations before, Special Counsel Robert Mueller has quickly begun trying to take back the narrative by dropping a Trump-Russia bombshell.
The same day that Donald Trump Jr held his infamous meeting at Trump Tower with representatives from the Russian government, millions of dollars were shifted among the Russians who were involved in the meeting, according to a new BuzzFeed report. We already know that Trump Jr was told in advance that the meeting would be about illegally obtained dirt on Hillary Clinton. Now we know that, whatever went on during that meeting, it was serious enough that the Russians involved immediately began paying each other off.
So who’s the source of the BuzzFeed story? “Four federal law enforcement officials.” Everyone knows that Robert Mueller runs a tight ship and nothing leaks accidentally, or without his approval. So there’s no doubt here that Mueller strategically leaked this story today, just as the nonsense story about Rod Rosenstein was dominating the airwaves. We’ll see how much of a dent Mueller’s story makes in the Rosenstein story, which is more ratings-friendly, even though it’s factually inaccurate to the point of fiction.
There is one other thing to keep in mind about this new Trump-Russia bombshell: Paul Manafort was at the Trump Tower meeting in question. He knows what was discussed. He just cut a plea deal a week ago, and he’s now told Robert Mueller’s team everything he knows, as part of his cooperation agreement. So Mueller knows what happened at that meeting. Manafort is also deeply connected to the Russians, which suggests that he may have tipped off Mueller about the money trail.
