Donald Trump’s revealing answer today about Robert Mueller

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

Even as Donald Trump’s various allies continue to try to falsely smear Special Counsel Robert Mueller for partisan reasons, and Mueller continues to quietly but aggressively move forward with his investigation, Trump doesn’t seem to have any idea what’s truly happening on either side. His occasional remarks about Mueller have painted him as sheltered, clueless, and incoherent. Today he opened up more when asked about Mueller, and his answer was unintentionally revealing.

Trump held a surreal press conference today while appearing with the Republican leadership at Camp David. Trump was asked by a reporter if he’d be willing to be interviewed by Robert Mueller. Trump immediately said “Yeah.” He’s given this answer before to this same question, and no one has any way of knowing whether he’s telling the truth about it. But he then launched into a rambling answer about how he views the investigation.

Trump said “Just so you understand, there’s been no collusion. There’s been no collusion. There’s been no crime. And in theory, everybody tells me I’m not under investigation. Maybe Hillary is, I don’t know, but I’m not. But there’s been no collusion. There’s been no crime. We’ve been very open. We could have done it two ways. We could have been very closed, and it would have taken years. But you know, sort of like, when you’ve done nothing wrong, let’s be open and get it over with.” There are a few revealing things in this word salad.

First, this further underscores that Donald Trump appears to honestly believe he’s somehow not under investigation. His attorneys have told him that he’s not Robert Mueller’s target, and he’s chosen to believe it, either out of naivety or wishful thinking or senility. Second, Trump is now so far removed from reality that he’s convinced himself no crimes were committed, even though four of his top people have been arrested, and two of them have already pleaded guilty to felonies. Third, Trump’s attorneys appear to have truly convinced him that if he plays along with the investigation, it’ll go away soon. So much for the notion that he’s gearing up to try to find a way to fire Mueller; he doesn’t even know what Mueller is doing to him. Contribute to Palmer Report
