Tide turns as GOP Congressman slams Donald Trump for calling for a Civil War

When Donald Trump tweeted a quote late on Sunday night that made clear he was in favor of a “Civil War” if he’s impeached and removed, we were left to wonder if this might finally be the breaking point. Sure enough, to the surprise of no one, that phrase quickly ended up trending atop Twitter. But then something surprising did happen.

Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger quoted Donald Trump’s Civil War tweet and added these words of his own: “I have visited nations ravaged by civil war. @realDonaldTrump I have never imagined such a quote to be repeated by a President. This is beyond repugnant.”

That’s right, a House Republican just publicly called Trump “repugnant” while slamming him for having taken things way too far. As a reminder, Congressman Kinzinger is one of the people who will soon be voting on whether to ratify articles of impeachment against Trump. We’re not sure what Kinzinger will do in that regard, but he’s clearly had enough of Trump’s crap, and he’s not afraid to say so.

We’ll see where this goes. Even as Donald Trump was openly calling for a Civil War, Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy was on 60 Minutes blindly defending him. But we’ve already seen GOP Congressman Mark Amodei come out in favor of the House impeachment inquiry, and now we’ve got GOP Congressman Adam Kinzinger ripping Trump to shreds. It raises the question of how long McCarthy can keep his caucus in line, and whether Trump might actually manage to self-impeach before the week is over.
