The ever clueless Donald Trump may not know this, but you do: Governors don’t get to vote on impeachment and removal of the President. But even as Republicans in the House and Senate twiddle their thumbs and try to figure out how to navigate Trump’s impeachment in a way that’ll do the least damage to their own reelection prospects, two Republican Governors aren’t wasting any such time.

Vermont and Massachusetts are the kind of blue states where the Democrats are on the far left, and the Republicans are moderate conservatives. It doesn’t exactly align with the overall national political landscape. Accordingly, Vermont’s Republican Governor Phil Scott and Massachusetts’ Republican Governor Charlie Baker are not far-right conservatives or Trump supporters by any stretch of the imagination. In fact they’ve both criticized him in the past.

Still, it’s a big deal that multiple Republican governors are now coming out in favor of Donald Trump’s impeachment. As the first state-level Republican office holders to do so in the nation, it breaks the ice, and it sends a message to other moderate Republicans that they can get away with doing the same.

Of course Donald Trump will probably turn around and attack Scott and Baker over this. But with Trump circling the drain, his attacks don’t carry the weight โ€“ even in Republican circles โ€“ that they once did. We expect some other blue state Republican Governors will follow their lead. Of course the big news will be when or if a Republican in the House or Senate finds the guts to say it.
