Omarosa releases devastating new recording of a clueless Donald Trump
It turns out the tape Omarosa released yesterday of John Kelly was just a warning shot. Today she’s released a recording of a phone conversation she had with Donald Trump, and it’s become clear why the entire Trump White House has been in a panic since yesterday: this recording paints Trump in a devastatingly bad light.
This morning Omarosa gave NBC News a recording of the phone call she had with Donald Trump the day after John Kelly fired her. Trump said to her, “Omarosa, what’s going on? I just saw on the news that you’re thinking about leaving. What happened?” She told Trump that Kelly had fired her. Trump responded by saying “No, nobody even told me about it. You know they run a big operation, but I didn’t know it. I don’t know that. Goddamn it. I don’t love you leaving at all.” He said these things with no hint of surprise or emotion in his voice.
John Kelly has claimed that he fired Omarosa with Donald Trump’s blessing. Clearly, Trump is claiming the opposite here. There are two possibilities. The first is that Trump is merely pretending not to know anything about the firing, which would mean that he isn’t willing to take responsibility for his own decisions. The second possibility is that Trump really is just this clueless about the major decisions being made in his White House, such as the firing of one of his senior advisors. Pick whichever one you think seems most likely, but either scenario paints a devastating picture.
Even as Donald Trump and his White House slammed Omarosa yesterday for releasing a recording of John Kelly firing her in the situation room, they didn’t bother to suggest that the recording was doctored or a fake. In so doing, they admitted it was real. They’re now going to have a difficult time trying to claim that this isn’t really Trump on this recording – and there’s no way to explain away this conversation.
