Considering how the day had gone for Donald Trump, it couldn’t have been much more of a fitting ending. Trump spent the day losing major court rulings, watching people testify against him after he’d ordered them not to, and trying to disavow himself of Rudy Giuliani amid reports that Rudy is the subject of a federal criminal investigation. So naturally, at the end of it all, Trump fired someone.

Donald Trump tweeted tonight that Acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan is resigning to spend more time with his family. We all know that in the political world, resigning to “spend more time with his family” means that Trump forced him to resign. The best clue about the reason why is the timing.

McAleenan had been a key point person for Trump’s racist, psychotic anti-immigrant platform. One judge ruled today that Trump can’t build his border wall with the money he stole from unrelated programs. Another judge ruled today that Trump can’t block certain immigrants from entering the country. These kinds of rulings enrage Trump, and while they’re always his own fault for pushing unconstitutional policies to begin with, he always needs a scapegoat – because nothing can be his fault.

So it’s not difficult to figure out what more or less happened here. Along with everything else that’s going wrong for Donald Trump right now, his anti-immigrant house of horrors is falling apart, and so now his main anti-immigrant guy is exiting stage left. What’s remarkable is that Kevin McAleenan served as Homeland Security Secretary in an acting capacity for six months, meaning the position has technically been vacant all this time – and now Trump needs a new Acting Secretary to replace his Acting Secretary.
