Donald Trump just got hit with some really bad news ahead of his televised impeachment hearings
There’s so much going wrong for Donald Trump right now, it’s difficult to keep track of it all. We’re half a day away from the start of televised impeachment hearings against him, and now he’s getting bad news that helps spell out just how ugly this is about to get for him.
We’ve all seen Donald Trump’s poll numbers continue to get uglier for him on all fronts. Impeachment poll numbers are bad for him. His 2020 poll numbers are terrible. And his overall approval rating is as bad as ever. But Trump keeps fighting back against this, at least in his own mind, by periodically tweeting that the Rasmussen poll has his approval rating at around 50%.
If you’re not familiar with Rasmussen, let’s just say that it’s by far the least accurate and most ridiculed of the major polling outlets. The fact that it’s had Donald Trump’s approval rating as high as 50%, at a time when other polling outlets have more than 50% of the public wanting Trump removed from office, shows you how far off base it is. But as first flagged by Matt Rogers of Politidope, Trump’s Rasmussen approval rating has dropped by six points over the past five days, and is now at just 44%.
To be clear, that’s still not an accurate number. By all accounts Donald Trump’s approval rating has been well below 44% all along – and there’s no statistical basis to explain why it would have suddenly dropped six points over the past five days. In other words, Rasmussen is as illegitimate as ever. But Rasmussen sure does seem to be hedging its bets heading into impeachment, by sending Trump’s approval rating down closer to where it actually this. This suggests that Rasmussen expects Trump’s real approval rating to drop even further, and it’s trying to avoid being too far above the averages. If Rasmussen thinks Trump is about to take a fall, that’s particularly bad news for him.
