Special Counsel Robert Mueller did not have a good day today. During his public testimony he often came across as unknowledgeable about his own investigation, confused about what was being asked, or both. House Democrats didn’t have a great day either, because their star witness didn’t exactly impress anyone. But none of that matters, because one person in particular just had a really bad day.

That person is, of course, Donald Trump. It doesn’t matter that Robert Mueller came off poorly. It only matters that Mueller said the things that needed to be said. The lasting soundbites coming out of his testimony today are of Mueller confirming that Trump obstructed justice, and Mueller saying that based on his report, Trump can be indicted (translation: arrested) as soon as he’s no longer in office.

Everything else that gets said today will be just so much cable news fodder, and won’t ultimately impact things, because most Americans don’t watch cable news. They just get the three or four big soundbites from social media or from the nightly network news. What they’ll hear is that Trump did some very wrong things, and that he might end up going to jail for it. That alone will be enough to increase the number of Americans in favor of Trump’s impeachment, which gives the Democrats some options.

Donald Trump had a very bad day. It could hypothetically have been even worse for him if Robert Mueller had taken the stand and flat out stated that Trump is a career criminal who colluded with Russia and who needs to go to prison. But in reality, Mueller was never going to say anything like that, and no knowledgeable observer was expecting anything like that. Regardless of how this day went for anyone else involved, it went badly for Trump – and that’ll be the only takeaway that anyone remembers by the end of the week.
