As things have hit the fan for him over the past twenty-four hours, Donald Trump has gone completely silent. He hasn’t tweeted in forty-eight hours, even as his remaining surrogates have contradicted each other and embarrassed themselves. We’ve accused him of being a crybaby when things get tough and a quitter when things get really tough. Some have asked if there’s more to Trump’s silence. So let’s talk about the impeachment elephant in the room.

Shortly after Trump hired Rudy Giuliani to be the clown jester of his legal team, he also hired Emmet Flood to be the brains of the operation. Flood was Bill Clinton’s impeachment lawyer, so there’s no question why Trump hired him. Trump fears he’s getting impeached, if not now, then after the midterms. Some have asked if Trump’s silence is Flood’s doing.

On the surface, there initially seems to be merit to this notion. The first thing any competent lawyer would do is to tell Trump to shut up and stop incriminating himself with his Twitter meltdowns. In fact, considering that Flood turned down the job a month before he finally accepted it, he likely had the leverage to tell Trump that he would only take the job if the Twitter meltdowns stopped. But there’s ultimately a flaw with that theory.

If Emmet Flood only took the gig on the condition that Donald Trump stop incriminating himself on Twitter, then there’s no way Flood would stand for Trump sending Rudy Giuliani out there to incriminate him on television on a daily basis. Either Flood has control of Trump or he doesn’t, and based on the free rein that Rudy has, it’s clear that Flood doesn’t have control over anything. So why has Trump truly gone quiet? This takes us back to our initial conclusion: he’s just a crybaby coward who can’t handle it now that the going has gotten tough.
