Rachel Maddow just nailed it

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

There are a number of reasons why Donald Trump shouldn’t be holding an in-person Republican National Convention. First, it’s not safe during a pandemic. Second, he’s holding it in Jacksonville, the site of a horrific KKK massacre, on the anniversary of that massacre. Now Rachel Maddow has pointed out yet another reason why this is all an idiotic idea.

The thing about Jacksonville is that it’s not a particularly large city. For instance, when it hosted the Super Bowl, there weren’t nearly enough hotel rooms to accommodate the event, so cruise ships had to be brought in and docked off the coast to serve as de facto hotels. Of course now we’re in the midst of a pandemic, where cruise ships are seen as particularly unsafe, and yet Maddow revealed on-air tonight that that city is considering bringing in cruise ships during the Republican National Convention.

Maddow pointed out that this would be particularly unsafe considering the advanced age of many of the delegates – particularly when Florida is now setting new record highs in daily new coronavirus cases. Maddow sarcastically asked if the GOP was also going to have delegates participate in a doorknob licking competition, or a game of “Anyone want to sneeze in my face?”

It’s not just that this convention is a bad idea for attendees, and for the city of Jacksonville. It’s also likely to backfire on Donald Trump, due to the sheer number of ways in which this will get ugly.
