Rachel Maddow just exposed John Cornyn’s corrupt motivation for stalling Vanita Gupta’s DOJ nomination
At this point all of President Joe Biden’s top level cabinet positions have been confirmed. But the Republican Senate is still finding ways to drag out some of the secondary positions. For instance, Republican Senator John Cornyn has been doing his best to delay the confirmation of Biden’s nominee for Associate Attorney General, Vanita Gupta.
It turns out Cornyn has a particularly personal motivation for stalling Gupta’s nomination. During her MSNBC show on Wednesday night, Rachel Maddow exposed the full story. Decades ago, Cornyn publicly backed a racist Texas Sheriff who was arresting Black people in systematic fashion and just making up the reasons. Gupta was the one who busted the Sheriff and got him criminally convicted for it.
The kicker is that if John Cornyn had simply left it alone and stayed out of the way of Vanita Gupta’s confirmation, this twenty year old scandal would have remained dormant. But because he sought petty vengeance by trying to delay her nomination, now he has to deal with this scandal being back in the headlines – and Gupta will be confirmed anyway.
