The real trouble with the Republicans in the Trump era is that even when you presume the absolute worst about them, they somehow manage to end up proving they’re even worse than that. The GOP has once again done precisely that, and Rachel Maddow has responded by taking a proverbial blowtorch to them.

This week Fiona Hill, a Russia expert who spent more than two years serving on Trump’s National Security Council, used her televised impeachment testimony to ask Republicans to knock it off with the phony conspiracy theories. She pointed out that Russia obviously did interfere in the 2016 U.S. election, and Ukraine obviously did not. But even after her testimony, the Republicans have since continued to push the false claims that it was Ukraine who somehow interfered in the 2016 election.

On her MSNBC show on Friday night, Rachel Maddow pointed out that it’s theoretically possible that Trump’s underlings and House Republicans don’t know they’re spreading false information when they keep claiming Ukraine meddled in the election. But she cited news reports that the U.S. intel community has in fact briefed Republican Senators on the fact that the whole “Ukraine meddled in the U.S. election” narrative is a false one that was specifically crafted by Vladimir Putin – yet GOP Senators Chuck Grassley and Ron Johnson are pushing ahead with a sham investigation into the phony Ukraine conspiracy theory.

Maddow explained that these two Republican Senators know they’re pushing lies and running a bogus investigation, because they were briefed on the fact that none of it is true. At this point Grassley and Johnson are participating in a felony criminal conspiracy against the United States by pursuing this phony probe. We’ll see if they end up criminally indicted around the time Donald Trump is hauled off to prison.
