House Republican abruptly announces he’s quitting after Donald Trump’s civil war meltdown

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. Last night Donald Trump called for a “Civil War” if he’s impeached and removed. It prompted Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger to publicly slam Trump for being ” beyond repugnant,” which many took as a tacit endorsement of Trump’s impeachment. Since then, we’ve been waiting to see if any other House Republicans might grow a spine. Instead, one of them just did the opposite.

Republican Congressman Mac Thornberry from Texas abruptly announced just now that he’s quitting Congress at the end of his current term. He’s only 61, not what most would consider to be retirement age. He doesn’t have any known scandals. He’s just quitting, out of nowhere. There’s no proof that he’s quitting because Trump is being impeached and is going off the deep end, but consider the circumstances.

Thornberry represents a deep red district where Donald Trump received eighty percent of the vote in 2016. Try to imagine Thornberry standing against Trump in way, shape, or form, and then getting reelected. It wouldn’t happen. He’d lose a Republican primary challenge to a pro-Trump candidate.

Congressman Mac Thornberry can’t take a stand against Donald Trump – at least not without ending his career in the process. And yet Thornberry will soon have to vote on whether to impeach Trump. We’re left to wonder if this is Thornberry’s way of freeing himself up to vote his conscience on impeachment. In fact, we suspect that a whole lot of these recent abrupt House Republican resignations and retirements are centered around impeachment.
