Melania Trump is on the cover of Us Magazine right now, along with a story that quotes her unnamed friends discussing how unhappy she is in her life with Donald Trump, and how badly she wants to leave him. Whatever you think of Us Magazine, they wouldn’t write such a story unless Melania’s friends really were telling them these things. And Melania’s friends wouldn’t be telling a magazine these things unless she wanted them to. Just don’t tell that to Melania’s spokesperson.

Melania’s communications director Stephanie Grisham is now declaring that the Us Magazine story is “false.” We suppose we should give her credit for not simply yelling “fake news” at it. She’s adding “I’d challenge the sources saying those things to do so on the record.” Oh, and in case anyone didn’t understand her the first time around, Grisham is adding “I stand by what I said, which was actually on the record.”

Let’s be clear here. When you pick a prolonged fight like this over a controversial news story, you’re only serving to bring more attention to the story. Donald Trump clearly doesn’t understand that. We have no idea if Melania Trump understands that. But a seasoned communications professional like Melania’s spokesperson would understand that. This is a classic case of protesting too much – and we have to wonder if it’s an intentional way of making sure the Us Magazine story remains in the headlines for more days than it otherwise would have.

Keep in mind that Melania Trump has been officially standing by Donald Trump, even as she’s repeatedly snubbed him of late by refusing to stand next to him, and refusing to ride in the same car as him. Now she has her spokesperson pumping new life into the story about Melania being unhappy and wanting to leave Donald. We think she’s protesting too much.
