Here’s the precise moment Donald Trump became motivated to try to pull off the Ukraine treason thing
As the day goes on, a few things are becoming more clear. First, the whistleblower complaint is about more than just Donald Trump’s attempt at conspiring with the president of Ukraine to alter the outcome of the 2020 election. Second, the Ukraine thing itself is even uglier than has been let on.
The timeline of events in the whistleblower report is also becoming more clear – and it’s giving away what apparently made Donald Trump think he could somehow get away with these antics. For instance, Laura Rozen of Al-Monitor has pointed out a pair of dates that serve to set off all the alarms.
Donald Trump’s fateful phone call with the president of Ukraine took place on July 25th. Robert Mueller’s televised testimony about Trump’s obstruction crimes took place on July 24th. That can’t be a coincidence. Mueller’s testimony was uneven and at times hesitant, but he also spelled out that Trump is pretty clearly going to prison if he loses the election.
It’s difficult to say if the damning parts of Mueller’s testimony scared Trump into thinking he had to try to rig the 2020 election to stay out of prison, or if the shakier parts of Mueller’s testimony left Trump feeling cocky enough to think he could get away with trying to rig the election. Either way, this has to have been the moment where Trump became motivated to try to pull off the treason thing – and he was dumb enough to get caught.
