Donald Trump’s idiotic North Korea gambit is already falling to pieces

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

Yesterday, when Donald Trump and his fellow Russian puppet Kim Jong Un announced they were going to hold a meeting, Palmer Report pointed out that it was little more than a choreographed charade, conveniently timed to distract from Trump’s worsening scandals. We said that the measure of success or failure of this distraction would come in the form of how many or few mainstream media outlets and pundits were willing to go along with it, instead of calling it out for what it is. We’re already seeing how this is playing out.

It wasn’t a great sign yesterday, when immediately after Donald Putin Trump and Kim Putin Un made their announcement, MSNBC host Chris Matthews eagerly bought into it hook, line and sinker. But in the twenty-four hours since, a number of cooler heads have prevailed. For instance here’s a headline today from the Washington Post: “Damage control at White House to reverse Trump’s stunning blunder.”

This came after Trump’s White House was basically forced to admit today that Trump wasn’t actually offering to meet unconditionally with Kim, and that he’s really only laying out the same set of conditions for a potential meeting that President Obama and previous U.S. Presidents have laid out. In other words, there’s probably nothing to see here once the smoke clears from the initial stunt of an announcement. So where does this leave us?

There was major new Trump-Russia news today, as Sam Nunberg reversed course and spent all day testifying before Robert Mueller’s grand jury after all. Donald Trump’s attorneys also revealed the weakness of their hand when they offered to let Mueller interview Trump in return for a time limit on the length of the overall investigation. So let’s see how the likes of CNN and MSNBC handle this tonight. How much time will they give to the very real Trump-Russia developments, and how much time will they spend doing Trump a favor by focusing on his latest North Korea fakery? We’ll see, but for now this gambit is already falling apart for Trump.
