Donald Trump’s GOP allies are getting picked off one by one

Just how uniquely corrupt is Donald Trump? Yesterday one of his earliest GOP backers in Congress was criminally indicted, and it wasn’t even among Trump’s three biggest criminal scandals of the day. Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter and his wife were busted yesterday for fraudulent misuse of campaign funds, which we might be tempted to write off as happenstance if not for the fact that the first GOP Congressman to endorse Trump just got arrested a couple weeks ago.

Yes, it’s true that prominent politicians from both parties get popped for various criminal scandals from time to time, and it doesn’t necessarily mean that something is afoot; sometimes it just means one person was dirty and happened to get caught. But consider the pattern here. Earlier this month Chris Collins, the very first GOP Congressman to endorse Donald Trump, was arrested for insider trading. Now Hunter, the second GOP Congressman to endorse Trump, is the second GOP Congressman to get arrested this month.

To be clear, these people aren’t being indicted and arrested due to any criminal entanglements with Donald Trump; they were each simply using their office to run their own (alleged) financial scams. But that’s the point, isn’t it? Trump has spent his entire career, in real estate and in politics, trying to surround himself with as many dirty people as possible. After all, they’re the ones who are going to be willing to do his dirty bidding when it comes down to it. We were reminded of this yesterday when Trump’s campaign chairman was being convicted in one courtroom at the exact same time Trump’s former lawyer was pleading guilty in another courtroom.

So it’s not surprising to learn that the first two Republican Congressman to endorse Donald Trump were criminals all along. It’s why they were attracted to each other early on; corruption seeks corruption. What is startling is that the Feds just happened to catch these two particular Congressmen in the act. It’s almost as if they knew where to look, because anyone who eagerly associates with Trump is either a criminal or an idiot or both.

So you have to wonder if the Feds might be looking into the financial histories of everyone in Congress, as a way of dismantling the gang of political criminals Donald Trump has surrounded himself with. The guilty ones all deserve to go down, regardless of political alliances or party. We know that the end result of such a crackdown would disproportionately take down Republicans in general, and Trump allies in particular, leaving Trump more vulnerable than ever.

This could mark the start of a whole lot of Trump-allied Republicans in Congress getting popped one by one for various crimes, pushing the party into a panic. It’s worth keeping mind that a disproportionately large number of House and Senate Republicans decided not to seek reelection this year, including quite a few who would have had a good at winning even in a Blue Wave year. It’s almost as if they’ve known what was coming. Or is it merely an impressive coincidence that the first two GOP Congressmen to endorse Donald Trump were both just indicted?
