Earlier today a reporter for The Atlantic revealed that Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth had accidentally texted him the secret plans for a US air raid in Yemen. It was an egregious breach of security protocol, and a stunning (yet not surprising) display of reckless incompetence from Hegseth. Now he’s digging himself an even deeper hole.

When reporters confronted Hegseth about his exploding scandal, he tried suggesting that the whole thing had been made up by the Atlantic. Hegseth said “You’re talking about a deceitful and highly discredited so-called journalist who has made a profession of peddling hoaxes time and time again.” Oops, wrong answer.

Hegseth was clearly trying to channel Donald Trump by simply blaming his own incompetence on the media. The problem: by the time Hegseth had his meltdown, the Trump regime had already confirmed the authenticity of the texts that Hegseth had sent to the reporter.

What’s remarkable is that if you watch the Hegseth clip, he seems truly frazzled, almost manically so:

.
It’s clear that Pete Hegseth is in way over his head and is worried about what comes next. But given how far removed from reality Donald Trump is, it’s unlikely that he’ll do anything about the scandal. Earlier today Trump said “I know nothing about” the scandal. That’s not surprising. If Trump were interested in doing the job correctly, he wouldn’t have hired a clown like Hegseth to begin with.
