Robert Mueller just destroyed someone named “Person A”
If you’re reading Robert Mueller’s new criminal charges against Trump-Russia attorney Alex Van Der Zwann and you’ve gotten as far as the mention of “Person A” and you’re thinking “Wait I think that might be me,” then you’re in some deep trouble. Mueller just destroyed someone involved with the Trump-Russia scandal today without even mentioning their name, though there are some hints as to the possible identity.
This has echoes of when Mueller obtained a sealed “Indictment (A)” against an unknown person in conjunction with the indictment against Paul Manafort and Rick Gates, but this is somewhat different. Almost by definition, “Indictment (A)” has to be against a bigger fish in the Trump-Russia scandal than Manafort, which means someone like Donald Trump Jr or Jared Kushner or Donald Trump himself. In this instance, “Person A” could be anybody. The biggest hint about the person’s identity is that there’s a need to publicly conceal it for now.
That means it’s not just some random schmuck who was caught conspiring with Van Der Zwann to mislead federal investigators. It’s someone important. Who is it? One MSNBC talking head believes it’s a prominent Ukrainian citizen, while another talking head (probably mistakenly) thinks it’s just a reference to Rick Gates. Online pundits have pointed out that Van Der Zwann has family ties to Alfa Bank in Russia, which has been alleged to have played a key role in the Trump-Russia scandal. Still others have pointed out that Van Der Zwann works with Paul Manafort’s daughter.
So who is Person A? As of now, we have no way of knowing for sure. But that’s the entire point. Robert Mueller wants this person’s identity concealed for now, for some strategic reason or another. All we know for now is that Person A is in some deep, deep trouble, and that the person in question almost certainly knows they’re the target.
