There is now a clear path to Donald Trump’s ouster
There has been a lot of focus on Donald Trump’s impeachment, and whether there would be enough votes to convict and remove him. But while the impeachment process may play a role in Trump’s ouster, it’s important to keep this in mind: of the two U.S. Presidents who have been impeached, neither was ousted. And the one time a U.S. President was ousted, he never was impeached. It all comes down to the threat, the process, the resulting bludgeoning, and – most importantly – the leverage involved. When it comes to Donald Trump, the leverage equation just shifted dramatically.
Last night we learned from ABC News that Michael Cohen has spent the past month selling Donald Trump out to Special Counsel Robert Mueller. If you’re rooting for Trump’s ouster, that’s fantastic. But that same report included something arguably even more important: Cohen has also spent the past month selling out Donald Trump and the Trump Organization to the state of New York.
It’s long been widely reported that the state of New York has been poking around in the Trump Organization. But this new development represents a whole lot more than just “poking around.” Michael Cohen spent decades working as the primary fixer for the Trump Organization. He knows where all of the bodies are buried, because he’s the one who buried them. Now he’s revealed all of this. It immediately opens two avenues for New York to destroy Donald Trump.
The first is that New York can use this inside information to indict and arrest Donald Trump Jr, Ivanka Trump, and Eric Trump, all of whom played key roles in the Trump Organization. The second is that New York can begin the process of seizing Donald Trump’s assets that were acquired through criminal means. New York is setting the stage to pick off Trump’s properties, bank accounts, and even his kids, while he’s still in office. That’ll represent the best possible leverage for forcing him to resign, before he loses everything.
