Oh come on, not John Bolton again
Oh good, John Bolton is finally ready to say something tonight. How do you type an eye roll emoji, again? This is the guy who teased that he had something important to say about Donald Trump’s Ukraine crime spree, but couldn’t be bothered to testify during House impeachment hearings, and then lost out on his subsequent opportunity to testify during the Senate impeachment trial. Now he wants to speak up? But what he has to say tonight could actually end up being important to Trump’s downfall.
John Bolton has decided that he’s going to launch his upcoming anti-Trump book his way, regardless of how it impacted impeachment or the nation. Selfish? Yes. Tone-deaf? Yes. Stupid on his part? Sure, if his silence has cost him as many potential book sales as it appears to have. But while Bolton’s obsession with his book may be a travesty, it’s still likely to end up have a severe negative impact on Trump’s presidency and reelection odds, if not the impact it could have had.
CNN says that John Bolton is speaking publicly tonight at Duke University, along with former Obama National Security Adviser Susan Rice. The event isn’t specifically about Bolton’s book. For that matter it’s not even necessarily about Trump. But you can believe the topic of Bolton’s book will come up, as will the question of whether Bolton is willing to testify to the House when it inevitably subpoenas him later in this election cycle. So what he ends up saying tonight could have a major impact on what comes next.
John Bolton deserves zero points for anything he does from here on out. He had his chance to do the right thing at the right time for the right reason, and he took a pass. But he’s still more than welcome to do as much damage to Donald Trump as he likes, if it helps take Trump down in November.
