Donald Trump offers lame compromise, outrages his base, Nancy Pelosi tells him to shove it
When Donald Trump announced last night that he’d be making a “major announcement” today about his government shutdown and imaginary border wall, various pundits suggested he was about to brazenly declare a national emergency or worse. Palmer Report predicted that he would once again simply say something weak and ineffective, because that’s what he always does in these situations. Trump’s “announcement” turned out to be even weaker than we were expecting.
Donald Trump spent nearly fifteen minutes giving a monotone and at times barely conscious speech, full of the usual racist lies about immigration, before getting to the punchline. Trump essentially offered to extend DACA for existing Dreamers in exchange for $5 billion for his border wall. This is absurd considering that DACA is already safe in the courts for at least another year.
Not only did the Democrats show no interest in his offer, his own racist base quickly began turning on him for having offered any pro-immigrant concessions at all. Nancy Pelosi quickly issued a statement lambasting Trump for trying to repackage the same old failed ideas as if they were something new, and making clear that Trump won’t have the votes.
Ann Coulter posted this tweet, making clear how unhappy Donald Trump’s base is about the fact that he’s caving even an inch on immigration: “100 miles of border wall in exchange for amnestying millions of illegals. So if we grant citizenship to a BILLION foreigners, maybe we can finally get a full border wall.” So now Trump still doesn’t have the votes, doesn’t have his wall, and it looks like he doesn’t have his racist base anymore either. Ta da!
