“Nuclear weapon” – legal expert reveals how Georgia’s special grand jury could end in RICO charges against Donald Trump
When Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis asked the court to empanel a “special” grand jury dedicated solely to her criminal probe into Donald Trump’s election crimes, it was widely believed that this was strictly to speed up the indictment process. But when the court granted that request this week, the language it used points to another purpose – and a major one.
John Dean, a legal expert and a key figure in the Watergate scandal, flagged this sentence in the court order granting the special grand jury: “This authorization shall include the investigation of any … predicate acts.” Dean then summed up the court’s words in this manner: “This authorizes a RICO racketeering investigation that reaches Trump’s illegal actions everywhere! GA has a nuclear weapon!”
Dean then added that “I have no doubt this sentence did not get there by accident.” We happen to agree. Back when DA Fani Willis was still getting this probe off the ground, she hired a racketeering expert – which you only do if you’re looking to bring RICO charges. Now, eight months later, Willis has gotten the courts to sign off on using this special grand jury to go after Trump for racketeering, which means she still intends to try to bring RICO charges.
We’ll see where all of this goes. Prosecutors tend to bring a wide swath of charges against a criminal kingpin like Donald Trump, including some charges that are more ambitious and other charges that are easier to get a conviction on. That way the trial jury has a smorgasbord of charges to choose from, and generally ends up convicting on something if not everything.
DA Fani Willis appears to be planning to charge Trump with everything from election tampering/fraud, a straightforward charge that can be proven with the recorded phone calls alone, to racketeering, a mafia-style charge. The timeframe is what it is. At this point it’s more important that Trump is being indicted in Georgia, than when he’s being indicted.
