Now we’re getting to the fun part
To hear some folks on our side tell it lately, President Biden is a goner, the Democrats have blown it, we got them all elected for nothing, Donald Trump is going to get away with it all, and Trump will end up back in power before you know it.
But then the past few days happened, and everything suddenly changed. Or more accurately, a few key breakthroughs allowed everyone involved to finally see what had been going on behind the scenes the entire time, and suddenly everyone’s perception changed.
First came the news that the Manhattan District Attorney has empaneled a new grand jury for the purpose of bringing more indictments in the criminal case against Donald Trump – the strongest evidence we’d seen to date that Trump is going to be indicted and arrested.
Then came the seemingly out of nowhere passage of the long stalled infrastructure bill, which was always going to happen but was starting to feel like it was never going to happen. Suddenly Biden and the Democrats went from supposedly having “no accomplishments” to having a veritable boatload of accomplishments for a first year President.
Then over the weekend came the news that the Fulton County District Attorney is looking to empanel a special grand jury to speed up her election tampering criminal case against Donald Trump, seemingly in an effort to indict and arrest Trump before the Manhattan DA can. Yes, we’re at that point where prosecutors are putting the finishing touches on their cases and are now jockeying to be the first one to put Trump in handcuffs.
For lack of another word, we’re now getting to the fun part. Politics is an ugly business, even when it’s heading in a constructive direction. The sausage-making of the infrastructure bill was an extended reminder of that. And Trump’s foray into politics was one of the ugliest things this nation has ever seen – but while his loss and ouster meant he was always going to end up in prison, the legal process doesn’t move anywhere nearly as quickly as it should.
This doesn’t mean it’s all wine and roses going forward. In fact we’re now getting to the tricky part, where everyone involved has to build on their success. We have to help Biden and the Democrats pass voting rights legislation in the coming months. Prosecutors have to get every last detail of their cases right before they can handcuff Trump. But considering how loudly we were being told we were “doomed” just a few days ago, it sure is good to be reminded that we’re actually on solid winning ground going forward.
