Now comes the tricky part
There’s a moment late in a soccer or hockey game where the team that’s behind by one score removes their goalie in favor of putting an extra scorer in the game. The premise is that since you’re going to lose anyway, you might as well throw caution to the wind and go on the offensive in high risk fashion.
The strategy not a good one. Most often it results in the losing team losing by an even bigger margin, for predictable reasons. It’s just that when you’re losing very late in the game, what other strategy is there? So you roll the dice. And while it rarely works, it does make things more unpredictable.
Donald Trump’s recent desperation moves – questioning whether Kamala Harris is really black, his insane press conference, his claim that Kamala’s huge rallies are AI generated fakes, and now his belated return to Twitter – are all signs that he knows he’s losing. He’s trying to shake things up by any means possible. He’s throwing everything he can find at the wall, in the hope that something just might stick.
It’s not that Trump going on the “offensive” like this means we suddenly have to worry about losing. Again, pulling the goalie usually just causes the losing side to lose by a bigger margin – and that’s when it’s done correctly. Trump’s incoherently bizarre attempt at “pulling the goalie” in this particular hockey metaphor is closer to stealing the Zamboni machine and driving it to McDonald’s under the mistaken belief that doing so will count as a goal.
In other words, while Donald Trump’s late game antics aren’t likely to help him and are instead more likely to hurt him, it’s still about to get weird. Yes, ever weirder than what we’ve seen over the past few weeks, which shouldn’t be possible. But Trump has always been one of the most maliciously weird people of all time, and now he’s going incoherently senile on top of it, while also losing an election on his way to prison.
So get ready for more weirdness. There’s not going to be a secret evil genius Trump master plan, mind you. Instead it’s going to just be an insane level of stupidity. Our job is to laugh at Trump over his foolishness, and laugh loudly, because that helps further break him. But we also have to remember that there’s plenty more work for us to do in this election cycle. We still have three months to go. And given the insanity of the era, we want to win by as big of a margin as possible. So let’s get to precisely that.
