Donald Trump has never shown any particular grasp of political or social issues to begin with. He’s never demonstrated much competence, or intellect, or coherence, or for that matter mental stability. But as things have closed in on him over the past few weeks, we’re seeing something new altogether: there is nothing left in Trump’s head.

Sure, Donald Trump woke up this morning and began dishonestly ranting about Hillary Clinton instead of posting something about 9/11, seemingly having forgotten what day it was. But his behavior later in the day was what gave away that he’s hurtling toward invalid status. When Trump showed up to deliver a 9/11 speech in Pennsylvania, he got off the plane and gave a big thumbs up to the crowd and pumped his fists, having once again forgotten that this was a somber event. He clearly thought he was there for some kind of political rally. Then came the hurricane debacle.

Trump spoke about Hurricane Florence preparations from the Oval Office this afternoon, and he could only get enough brain cells firing to mutter that it was going to be “tremendously big and tremendously wet.” This is how a first grader would describe a hurricane. He then began telling fictional tales of how he supposedly did such a great job responding to the hurricane in Puerto Rico. Not only was it offensively dishonest, it was mentally vacant.

This comes after Donald Trump gave a speech last week in which he slurred every other word and twice failed to say the word “anonymous” before giving up. During his 9/11 speech today, he sounded like a zombie while mumbling his way through a prepared speech. There is nothing left in this guy’s mind – either that, or he’s doing an incredible job of faking it, because he’s aiming for a “not guilty due to mental defect” verdict in his inevitable trial.
